Monticello rallies for 34-33 overtime win over Beckman in thriller

MONTICELLO (KWWL) — A late drive and a final extra point made the difference as Monticello rallied past Dyersville Beckman for a thrilling 34-33 overtime win.

“It was just awesome. I love the feeling,” senior quarterback Jeff Carlson said after the final moments, “I love this family we’ve got here. It’s just amazing to be a Panther right now.”

The Panthers hopes hung by a string in the final moments, but a missed field goal with 43 seconds left gave them life. Monticello trailed 27-20 and needed to go 80 yards with no timeouts to force overtime. That’s exactly what Carlson did. The Panther quarterback led a late drive, hitting Justin Recker on a bomb down to the seven yardline. Four plays later on fourth and goal from the five, Carlson connected with Tyler Luensman near the right sideline for a score with five seconds left. That forced overtime tied at 27 apiece.

Beckman opened the overtime with a three yard touchdown run from Evan Wulfkuhle. The Blazers, however, failed to convert on the extra point to lead 33-27, giving the Panthers a shot.

That’s when Carlson finished it, first hitting Luensman on a floater near the back right corner of the endzone to tie the game at 33. Carlson then knocked through the walk-off extra point to seal the come from behind victory.
