IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) – 2020 Presidential Candidate Joe Biden visited Iowa City for the Iowa City Labor Council Picnic.
In an exclusive interview with Biden and his wife, Jill, topics touched on ranged from his plan for healthcare to his planned investment for Iowa’s agricultural infrastructure.
In Biden’s opening speech he gave his take on the importance of labor in the U.S. Biden’s other important topic was his investment into rural Iowa.
“We’re talking about being able to invest $100 billion in broadband,” says Biden “The idea that every single school in Iowa no matter where they are, whether they are in a small town or a large town doesn’t have access in a timely way. That farmers can’t manage their own decision on when to go to market and not to market.”
Dr. Jill Biden is at the forefront of Biden’s education plan. She says she’s taking steps to make Iowa one of the leaders in education, once again.
“It’s going to start with the teachers,” says Jill. “It’s not going to be somebody talking down to the teachers, but its going to be the teachers saying what they want.”
Along with education reform candidate Biden critiqued the current state of the U.S. China Trade War. Biden says the agricultural side is in jeopardy.
“Iowa farmers have worked for years, and years to build up markets in China,” says Biden “China is not flooding the U.S. markets with agriculture we are the ones. The President is great for being tough on China when it doesn’t affect you at all. Farmers are getting killed as are the manufacturers. ”
A tough topic for the Bidens to discuss is their personal story with healthcare. In an emotional ad he talks of the need for the affordable care act to stay in place.
