Iowa City Liberty downs City High to start its sophomore season

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KWWL) – The Iowa City Liberty Lightning defeated the Iowa City High Little Hawks Friday in just their second ever varsity season.

The Bolts did it in dramatic fashion, too, chipping in a last second field goal to break the 20-20 tie and win 23-20.

Iowa City started the scoring, a one-yard hand off to Tonka Hickman made it 6-0 Little Hawks after a muffed snap on the PAT.

Liberty quickly responded, though, QB Drake Woody floating a dime to his receiver Ben Houselog in the back of the endzone to tie things up at 6-6. Drake is the son of University of Northern Iowa track hall of famer Joey Woody.

The teams traded blows late into the night (with the JV game going into overtime), but in the end it was the program established in 2018 edging out the school that’s been around since 1939.

Liberty sees Waterloo East on the road next week.
