Time to talk frost

It is that time of year when we get asked questions about the first frost. Farmers got a late start getting the crops in the ground due to flooding. A late frost this year would be very helpful. An early frost would not be a good scenario.

Here is a look back at the last three years to see when the temperature dropped below 32 degrees for the first time in the fall. Last year was between September 29 and October 15. These will vary from location to location.

The map below is from 2017. The first date below 32 degrees was roughly October 16 to 29.

Now a look back at 2016. The earliest date was around October 13.

Now that we know what it was like for the last three years…about the second week of October. When it comes to climatology, the NWS has the image below posted on their website. This shows the first date temperatures of 32 or colder are in the first week of October.

So the last three years the dates were about a week later than normal. Cross your fingers this year it is even later than that.
