UNI’s McElvain gets nod in the season opener

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — The opportunity belongs to redshirt freshman Will McElvain. UNI head coach Mark Farley named McElvain as the starting quarterback on Friday as the Panthers sit eight days away from their season opener with Iowa State.

McElvain won the job in what had become a two-man race with sophomore Jacob Keller.

The new UNI signal caller red-shirted his first season in UNI after an all-state high school career for Des Moines Lincoln. McElvain set Railsplitter records by passing for 2,331 yards and throwing for 30 touchdowns.

UNI travels to Iowa State for the season opener on August 31.
