Cedar Rapids Police hosting Active Threat Awareness presentation tomorrow night

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) — Have you ever wondered what to do in an active shooter or active threat situation?

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is holding a free Active Threat Awareness and Preparation program tomorrow to answer some of these questions.

It’s all happening tomorrow night from 6:30 to 8 pm in the Cedar Rapids Downtown Library at 450 5th Avenue SE, in the Whipple Auditorium.

The announcement came just days after two shootings killed more than 30 people in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

According to a press release the police department will discuss the integrated response training that police officers, firefighters, and other emergency services agencies have been performing in our community.

During the presentation potential indicators that someone may be a threat to themselves or others will also be discussed. The presentation will also go over steps that anyone can take to be better prepared should they find themselves in an active threat situation.

A 25-year veteran of the force, Leitenaunt Charlie Fields will facilitate the program. Fields oversees the Special Operations Unit, which includes the Special Response Team, Bomb Squad, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Crisis Intervention Team.
