EVANSDALE, Iowa (KWWL) – Summertime usually means fun in the sun, but one haunted attraction in eastern Iowa is already getting into the Halloween spirit.
Harris Haven Funeral Home and Ravenhurst Manor are opening their doors for a special edition summer haunt, called ‘A Midsummer Night’s Scream.’ They typically operate in the fall months but wanted to offer their customers a new experience.
Jordan Mattix has worked at the haunted house for 9 years. He started when he was in eighth grade. Mattix is one of 20 to 25 actors in charge of scaring people. Now, he also helps build props and design rooms inside the haunt.
After Halloween ends, Mattix said the employees get together and talk about what worked and what didn’t. They often go to conferences to get new ideas and inspiration.
A few months ago, they decided they wanted to open for one weekend in the summer. They began building in January. He said customers can expect a few new rooms with a tease ahead to October’s haunt.
“A lot of other big haunts like down in the South, they’re open year round, so we really can’t open in the winter,” Mattix said. “But we wanted to try in the summer and see what our turnout is like.”
Mattix said if the weekend goes well, the haunted house may open a few weekends throughout the year.
A Midsummer Night’s Scream opens Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $20 with access to both Harris Haven Funeral Home and Ravenhurst Manor.
