Cedar Rapids Xavier defeats Waverly-Shell Rock for 10th State Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) – Weather Saturday made for a beautiful day for the 2A Girl’s State Soccer Championship between Waverly-Shell Rock and Cedar Rapids Xavier.

WSR came in second last year and continued their chase for their first state championship. Xavier was looking for their 10th state trophy.

In the first half, both teams weren’t giving away holes in their defense easily; the two were tied 0-0 after the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, Xavier made a goal, putting WSR behind.

Shortly after, WSR scored and brought the score to 1-1.

The match went into overtime, but three minutes in Xavier scored to make it their 10th championship win.

“They were putting two on Catelyn so that freed Ella up a little bit it was just a giving of the confidence of you can do it, you can strike that ball I knew we would get chances it was just the case can we defend well and can we transition,” said Chris Higgins, Cedar Rapids Xavier head coach.

“I knew we had to score because it was golden goal so I might as well just have one, so I went for it and it went in,” Ella Kluesner said, who scored the winning goal.

“It was honestly really fast because I didn’t expect it to go in honestly and it just perfectly slides right behind the keeper and I am just so happy,” Quinn Hanigan, of Cedar Rapids Xavier, said.

For WSR, it’s back to the drawing board after only one loss in the regular season, which was to Xavier.

Go-Hawks head coach Lauren Greiner is living in the moment, but is ready to get back to the championship next year.

“There’s just so many people behind the scenes that make this happen and we are just so thankful for all of them and hopefully one day we can bring that trophy home to Waverly,” Greiner said.
