Ford executives say they are committed to reducing their carbon footprint by recycling plastic bottles and using them to make vehicle parts.
The automaker uses an average of 300 recycled plastic bottles per vehicle. That’s around 1.2. billion plastic bottles per year.
The plastic is shredded and sold to suppliers that convert it into fiber used to make sheets of plastic. Ford then uses the plastic for the underbody shields. They also use it for the wheel liners of F-Series trucks.
Ford said the recycled plastic is ideal for automotive parts because of its light weight.
