WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL)– UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo showed their appreciation for those in emergency medicine Thursday night.
“EMS Night Out” was held at Allen College near the hospital campus and about 160 emergency medical professionals attended.
The event is held every year to not only show appreciation for those in EMS, but also to update crews of new medical techniques and practices.
“Just like emergency medicine, and any other specialty, it changes all the time. New things happen every year, new medicine comes out, the way you treat something is changing, the way we don’t backboard or c-collar is changing. So they’re coming in and getting some education from our emergency physicians and others to tell you what is new, what is changing,” said Amber Heller, a nurse practitioner at Allen Hospital.
Many of the ambulance services across Iowa are volunteer, meaning crews provide the services in their off time.
The “EMS Night Out” corresponded with EMS Week, which was May 19-25.
