Iowa losses its number one spot in the annual Best State Rankings–Washington is new #1

Number one Iowa fell 13 spots in the new, 2019, U.S. News & World Report rankings of the Best States in America. Iowa ranked as the Best State in 2018, but is now ranked # 14 by the magazine.

Washington is the new number one state, according to the annual rankings. New Hampshire moved up to #2, followed by Minnesota, Utah and Vermont in the top-five.

Also in the top ten are Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, Nebraska and Colorado.

Iowa showed a decline in five previously # 1 categories, including education, health care, infrastructure, economy and crime and corrections.

Iowa’s best category this year is the overall ‘opportunity’ category, where Iowa is ranked as the number two state in the country. That is based on affordability, equality and economic opportunity using 12 metrics.

Iowa’s worst category in the new report is natural environment. Iowa ranks 25th or worse in all four of the metrics.

The annual report from U.S. News and World Report evaluates all 50 states, using 77 metrics and thousands of data points in 8 categories.
