UNI softball tops Iowa 4-2 on emotional night

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — The UNI softball team used the long ball to get the upper hand on in-state rival Iowa in a 4-2 win in the UNI-Dome on Tuesday night. The Panthers drilled a pair of home runs to secure the victory.

The win came on an emotional night for the Panthers who opened the game with a moment of silence for former player Micalla Rettinger who had been tragically killed just two days prior.

“The tragedy put a lot in perspective about why we’re really here,” said head coach Ryan Jacobs afterward, “but I was really happy with the way we played tonight.”

After Iowa scored in the top of the first, UNI tied it in the bottom half on a lead-off bomb over the wall in left by senior Brittney Krodinger. Her sister Courtney drove in another run with a one-out double in the bottom the fourth inning. Two batters later Jaclyn Spencer smashed a two-run bomb to center for a 4-1 lead.

On the mound Spencer scattered six Iowa hits, allowed two runs, and struck out ten batters to pick up the win.
