Dressing for success: The Career Clothing Closet

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – Hawkeye Community College is supplying students with free professional business clothes for all formal events.

“For a lot of our students,” said Student Life Coordinator Megan Reilly. “We wanted to make sure they have all the essentials possible to be as successful as possible post-Hawkeye.”

The idea got started after student life noticed students could use some fashion help in landing their first job. Any student attending the college can pick and keep one complete outfit per school year.

“I know a couple students have gone on interviews. Somebody got a job at Barnes and Noble and came back and told us, “it was because of this outfit i feel good and positive and confident about myself and i got the job.” we like hearing the success stories afterwards as well,” says Reilly.

For a community college student like Claire Christensen she says its a way to save money because not all college students see professional clothes as a necessity.

“They don’t want to move to college and look to spend money on dress clothes. That’s not something you want to be spending money on, when you come to college you want to spend money on your apartment, food, books, anything else but clothes,” says Christensen.

Christensen says getting one outfit has helped students get that one job they wanted for the future.
