State’s best battle at the “War at West Gym”

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) – The “War at West Gym” returned on Saturday night. Twenty-six of the state’s most talented boys and girls wrestlers hit the mat one final time this spring in the event put on by IAWrestle.com.

In the night’s featured match, Lisbon freshman state champ Robert Avila Jr. secured an overtime takedown to knock off 3A state champion Caleb Rathjen of Ankeny. The result flipped the script of a match at the Iowa/USA wrestling freestyle tournament last summer that saw Rathjen defeat Avila 8-4.

Riley Wright of Denver, a four-time podium finisher, took out Clear Lake state champion Eric Faught with an 11-3 major decision. Wright dominated the match after giving up an early first period take down, but for the senior who’s wrestling at Coe College next season, having another chance to take the mat was the biggest win.

It’s wrestling. I mean I think it’s great what IAWrestle does here putting the show on,” said Wright, “but if I get any opportunity to wrestle, absolutely I’m in.”

Wright’s teammate, Cael Krueger, will join him at Coe next season.
