DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) — Dubuque fire department has a new firehouse in the works for the west end district as they do not currently have a station that can respond to emergency calls quickly enough out west.
Fire Chief Rick Steines says this proposed plan will make response time quicker to 911 calls in the west end. Right now the station farthest west is station 2 on John F Kennedy road. He says this station covers the entire west end, a bigger area than the rest of the stations in the city.
“So we’re trying to improve on those times by moving a station farther west. What it does is it will actually shrink that response area and allow for a faster response.”
Steines says as the area develops more calls come in from the west end, and he anticipates even more calls to continue to come in.
“And now with the South West Arterial going in, in the next year or two we start to see hopefully development in that area and annexation so that’s going to drive our call volume on that end of town.”
Steines says the plan will take shape over the next 5 years beginning with the addition of 12 more first responders to staff the new station.
