UPDATE: Name released in deadly Johnson County car fire

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) – The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says sheriff’s deputies and authorities with the Kalona Fire Department found a body inside of a car after extinguishing a fire in the vehicle.

A call for the car fire in the 2900 block of 540th Street Southwest in rural Johnson County first went out at 12:42 p.m. Friday, according to Sheriff’s Office officials. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Johnson County Medical Examiner are now investigating the situation — with the cause of the fire not yet determined and the identity of the person being withheld as family members are notified.

UPDATE: (2/25) — The victim involved in the car fire last week has been identified as 85-year-old Gerald Maye.  An autopsy was performed at the University of Iowa Hospital, at this time the cause of death is unknown but the death is not considered suspicious.

The incident remains under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Medical Examiner with assistance from the State Fire Marshall.
