Top ranked Grundy Center rolls past Sumner-Fredericksburg to return to state

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — Grundy Center took control early and never looked back as the Spartans clinched a return to the 2A girls’ state basketball tournament with a 72-37 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Spartans cruised to a 41-9 lead over the Cougars at halftime.

Hailey Wallis scored 26 to lead the Spartans back to Des Moines. It’s a trip with a purpose after Grundy Center fell just short against Cascade in the 2018 state final.

“We just wanted to block all the extra noise out,” said Wallis, “Just come out play our game, and use that loss last year as a motivator.”

Top seeded Grundy Center opens the state tournament a week from Tuesday against Unity Christian.
