Moon Dogs

Similar to sun dogs, we can sometimes see MOON dogs.  That was the case in the wee hours Friday morning.

Similar to sun dogs, the moon’s light is refracted off the small ice crystals in the air.  It’s not often we see these here in Iowa, but it can happen in the bitter cold air.

You may have also noticed “beams” of light in the sky as well. These have been a common sight the past couple mornings.  They are called light pillars, which happen when light near the ground is reflected off ice crystals in the air.
