DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL)— Authorities say a mother and her boyfriend were arrested after her baby was found severely malnourished.
Iesha D. Searcy, 27, was arrested Tuesday at the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center on a warrant charging neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. Her boyfriend, Mark D. Ward, 26, was arrested on the same charge last week.
Court documents say Searcy’s nine month year old daughter was seeing a dietitian. The dietitian weighed the baby on August 15th, 2018. The babies weight was 10 pounds 8 ounces, way under weight for her age.
An appointment was made for August 17th of the same year. The doctor at medical Associates reported that the baby was “severely malnourished” and hospitalized immediately.
“Dr. Callahan listed in his report a denial of critical care and failure to provide adequate food,” court documents state. “Without medical intervention, (the girl) could have developed serious physical problems and even death.”
Searcy had not been regularly attending appointments for the nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children and did not receive all her allotted cans of formula for the baby from WIC, documents state.
Searcy and Ward were the girl’s primary caregivers, documents state. A warrant for Ward’s arrest was issued Feb. 4 and for Searcy’s arrest on Feb. 5.
