Tools for Schools: January winners buying nonfiction books

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) – Three teachers win $1,000 for the ‘Cedar Valley Tools for Schools’ award this school year.

Stacy Gary, Jennifer McCartan and Angie Chambers are third grade teachers at North Cedar Elementary in Cedar Falls.

The teachers hope to use their award money to buy Guided Reading Nonfiction Scholastic Short Reads.

They will use the engaging books to track their students’ reading progress and help them reach their goals.

The books are shorter, so they can be used during small group instruction and mini-lessons. They allow the teachers to test their students’ comprehension and fluency.

The goal is to inspire the kids to get excited about new topics. The teachers said the books can be used for years to come.

“Our ultimate goal is just to foster that love of learning and love of lifelong reading, and the hope is by having those engaging materials in the hands of students, we’ll be able to start that at an early age,” Chambers said.

The ‘Cedar Valley Tools for Schools’ program is a partnership between KWWL, the University of Iowa Community Credit Union and Kimball and Beecher.
