Waverly-Shell Rock took control early and held on late as the Go-Hawks topped fourth ranked Carlisle 8-5 to advance to the class 3A state semifinal round.
The Go-Hawks opened on a tear, batting ten runners in the first inning, while scoring six runs. Senior Carson Kallenberger and junior Carter Langreck provided the biggest fireworks in the inning. Kallenberger deposited a bases loaded, RBI single in to left for an early 2-0 lead. Langreck followed suit in the next at-bat, knocking a gap double in to left centerfield that cleared the bases.
Carlisle, however, scored five unanswered runs in the next three innings, started off by a Nate Mortimer three run home run over the suites beyond the left field fence.
W-SR, however, came up with some insurance in the fourth inning. Kallenberger knocked a clutch base hit in to left plating two more runs to seal the ballgame.
Head coach Casey Klunder called it a complete team effort.
“Our boys did a great job of extending the lead there in the late innings,” said Klunder, “Brady (Leonard) didn’t have his best stuff today, but it took a total team effort from our boys, and they did a wonderful job from start to finish.”
