Plans are already underway for a winter overflow shelter in Cedar Rapids.
The Community Overflow Winter Shelter System or (COWSS) has released a list of their needs for this coming winter which includes a new location.
Last year the overflow shelter was located at 33rd Ave.SW in an office building that was donated anonymously.
While the donated space came at just the right time last year, the hope this year is to have the shelter be closer to downtown.
In addition to a facility the shelter could also use donated cots, bedding, cleaning supplies and help with transportation.
470 people including 15 children used the shelter last year between November and March.
The shelter uses resources in the community to try and help those staying there find a better housing option.
We are told 1 in 4 of those who used the shelter last year have since found housing or are in a housing program.
